Educational Series - Management of Reflux: A guideline for pharmacists

This review is intended as an educational resource for community pharmacists. It discusses the new recommendations for reflux treatment and referral produced by the Australasian College of Pharmacy (ACP) in July 2024, in a publication titled — Management of Reflux: A guideline for pharmacists. The principal purpose of the guideline is to give pharmacists evidence-based advice on the use of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines for the treatment of heartburn or reflux in patients of all ages. Advice is also provided on appropriate lifestyle changes and when patients should be referred for medical evaluation. The guideline development evolved from a systematic search across four databases and two clinical trial registries. Evidence identified from studies, guidelines and reviews informed the Recommendations, which were assigned preliminary grades based on evidence quality: A (high), B (moderate), C (low), and D (very low).
